SS Dicky Dawn by paulmp SS Dicky Dawn by paulmp
A shot taken at dawn at the SS Dicky, Caloundra.
60 Second exposure.

Here is a group comment to everyone who asked if it is a boat.. yes it's a shipwreck. The ship was called the SS Dicky :)

Daily Deviation

Given 2008-12-17
SS Dicky Dawn by =pmp Suggester writes: "fantastic show of colour and atmosphere with a perfect long exposure showing the mist of the moving water and an interesting shipwreck poking through the waves. This shot has a great sense of setting as well as a wonderful view in the background of the setting sun. A truly breathtaking shot." ( Suggested by Xerces and Featured by kkart )

The first thing I noticed about this deviation is the colour. It has the biggest impact of the whole image.

It makes it seem surreal, almost supernatural, which is made more so by the long exposure, which has made the water appear like a kind of mist, which appears deceptively calm, like after a storm (which is actually how the SS Dicky was washed up in 1893).

The skeleton like structure of the remains of the Dicky is almost morbid in this photo, like a reminder of the kind of destruction and beauty that storms hold. It is a huge difference to seeing it in real life, where it usually has half a dozen kids playing in while being yelled at by their parents.

This photo gives me chills, making me wonder what was going through the 11 crew members minds when it washed up on the beach.

The photographer has chosen a beautiful angle to take the photo from, showing the whole of the ships remains and still capturing a beautiful view of the sunrise as well.

I wish the photographer all the best with any photos they may take in the future, for they will surely all be as beautiful as this one :)

Beautiful capture in this one. I love how these longer exposures bring out detail, and sometimes blur other detail, to give such a mood to a photo. I found this by way of this news article BTW [link]

Absolutely striking and astounding how you captured the mist and the tones around the wreck, not to mention how sweet it is that the wreck actually breaks the water. Def deserved DailyDev!

Any time. I can't wait to see the progression of your works and your style in the future. There isn't really a name behind it, just a inside joke. Its been my Screen name for a really long time though, so there have been many a joke about it. Any way, hope to talk to ya soon.

Peace Easy,
Dave

Umm, no ice in Queensland Australia.. home of the Gold Coast.. (think Miami for a similar climate).

It's a long exposure, capturing the movement of the water.

I really love the colors, they look amazing. And it the wreck makes me think of some sort of oceanic venus fly trap opening its jaws just above the surface.

This is really impressive! Congrats on the DD. But how big is that shipwreck actually? I have not concept of its size looking at it (mostly because the ocean lacks surface masses that you measure against.)
